Just something that I liked...

I really like the cinematography in this video, the close up angles almost gives of an intimate and personal atmosphere which I think would help in creating a music video as it draws the audience in more and helps covey the emotions of the artist an song. I also really like the lighting and colour pallet in the video as it gives the video a very calm tone that suits the music well. I don't think this would have worked as well if the colour pallet was louder or psychedelic.

Conventions of Indie music videos

I found this slide show that breaks down the codes and conventions of indie music videos and thought that it was quite useful.

Save Me Now by Toyboy & Robin

Again, here the black and white effect is used, but also the hand drawn illustrations gives the music video a very original and artistic effect. This is often used in music videos that have deep house style music such as Where are U now ft Justine Beiber by Skrillex and Diplo.

Pumped Up Kicks by Foster The People

In this video I like how it is filmed with a hand held camera as it makes the shots look like home videos which gives and nostalgic and reflective atmosphere that reflects the song. The beginning especially looked like a home movie due to the filter that was used to make it look old and low quality. Other effects used such as the black and white filter also have this effect. The monochrome colour pallet is also found a lot in indie music videos.

I Sell Comics by Courage My Love

This is another music video that falls under the Indie Rock genre, due to the music not being apart of mainstream music and the low-budget video that was obviously recoded on a hand-held camera, and done in public rather than in a studio. I think this actually works in the artists favour as it reflects the fun and light-hearted tone of the video.

Wonderwall by Oasis

Wonderwall by Oasis is possible one of the most iconic indie rock/British pop songs of the 90's. Is has very sensitive lyrics that have a careful balance of pop and grunge, not following the mainstream music trends. I like how the video is in black an white and reflects the slightly pessimist tone of the song. I also really like how the video starts with the fuzzy black outline, that reminds me of a burnt photograph, and the shots gradually jumping from a wide shot to a mid-close shot.

Target audience for Indie-Rock

Itch by Nothing But Thieves

This is another indie rock music video that was filmed in black and white which gives the video a profound and melancholic atmosphere to reflect the lyrics of the song nicely. I also really like the performance aspect of this video with the contemporary dancing which again helps create a profound atmosphere and makes the video look powerful.

And The World Was Gone by Snow Ghosts

This music video suits the criteria of the indie rock genre, as it looks fairly low budget, the lyrics to the song are sensitive and the song itself isn't found in mainstream music. I really like the kaleidoscope(?)  effect that is used in the video as it's in time with the beat of the song and suits the overall pessimistic tone of the music. I also like the extreme close up of the  eye closing to the beat of the music, although I think it is a little cliché it works well with the songs tone and lyrics. Furthermore, I really like the underwater shots especially with the light filtering through, this motif of  being underwater or drowning is usually associated with the end of the world or the end of something, another example of this would be in the music video Monster by Paramore.
